The Ghana Chapter of African Women's Entrepreneurship Programme (AWEP), an initiative of US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton has been launched in Accra to serve as a rallying point for women entrepreneurship and export trade.

The US Secretary of State, initiated the programme to empower women entrepreneurs in Africa to take advantage of the US Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which offers favourable terms of trade for select African countries.

AWEP has trained selected women from across the continent to form NGO chapters in their respective countries since its inception.

Already, the initiative has empowered business owners and provided them with knowhow to export under the terms of AGOA.

Ghana's Trade and Industry Minister, Hannah Tetteh said at the launch on Wednesday that the chapter hopes to make positive impact by leading in advocating for an enabling environment for women in business and their effective participation in international trade.

Silvia Banda, chairperson of AWEP Zambia, urged executives of the Ghana chapter to strengthen collaboration and partnership beyond their borders.

AWEP, which began in 2010, intends also to offer advice to government development agencies and private sector organisations on possible support and assistance to women oriented economic ventures.

In an era of huge global competition and business environment, Donald Teitelbaum, US Ambassador to Ghana, said no country must allow almost half of its population to go handicapped.
