Tanzania started to use the African Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa) in February 2002, the deputy minister for Industry and Trade, Mr Lazaro Nyalandu, told the House yesterday.

He was answering a question from Ms Riziki Juma, (Special Seats – CUF) who sought to know when the country started implementation of Agoa and the revenue realised from goods exported to America as well as plans to ensure the country exported more goods.

Mr Nyalandu said exports from Tanzania under Agoa realised a total of $13.4 million (about Sh20 billion) from 2002 to 2007.Between 2008 and 2009, US goods exported to Tanzania were valued $15.27 million (about Sh23 billion) and $1.006 million (Sh1.5 billion) respectively.

“For 2010 goods exported to America from Tanzania earned the country some $1.867 million (about Sh2.8 billion), an increase of 85 per cent compared with 2009 exports,” said Mr Nyalandu.

Goods imported from Tanzania consisted of precious stones, edible fruits and nuts, knit apparel, spices, coffee and vegetables. To ensure more goods are exported, Tanzania in collaboration with stakeholders under Agoa, prepared the Tanzania Trade Integration Strategy (TTIS) which lists goods that have a priority. These include cashewnuts, coffee, attire, precious stones and artifacts, he said.

“ The government would also improve the economic processing zones (EPZ) and start allocating special areas of investment to promote productivity with a special focus on local and foreign markets,” said Mr Nyalandu.

He further said that the government continued to empower small and medium entrepreneurs with capacity building and training. It also linked them to possible opportunities available in the country to enable them access the AGOA market.
