AGOA pre-forum event in Lusaka, with videoconference

Published date:
Sunday, 05 June 2011

The US Department of State and the World Bank Institute are convening a knowledge exchange videoconference on the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) on June 7, 2011. The event will bring together business professionals and young African entrepreneurs to discuss how AGOA can support sustainable development, youth employment and help enhance investment in Africa through the enactment of responsible business practices.

The United States Congress passed AGOA in 2000 to strengthen trade between the United States and sub-Saharan Africa countries that meet eligibility criteria, which require countries to attain a certain level of economic, legal, and human rights standards. AGOA is more than just a trade preference program; it provides the U.S. government and African partners a platform to discuss key economic, commercial, and political issues.

As part of the AGOA forum, jointly with the U.S. State Department, United Nations Global Compact and other partners, the World Bank is organizing a knowledge exchange pre-forum event on June 7, 2011 at the World Bank offices in Lusaka. The event will bring together business professionals and young African entrepreneurs to discuss how AGOA can support sustainable development, youth employment and help enhance investment in Africa through the enactment of responsible business practices.

In order to expand the reach, this pre-forum event will be connected through videoconference with World Bank country offices in Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Egypt, United States and Zambia, and will be made available to the rest of the world through webcast via the following link: http://streaming7.worldbank.org/vvflash/extlive. Low bandwidth streaming is also available via: http://wbmswebcast4.worldbank.org:8080/SmoothStreamingPlayer.html. The event will be recorded and available to view afterwards at: http://www.responsiblebiz.info/.
