Uganda will this month host a forum on trade and investment that will showcase the country’s various business opportunities, the Uganda Investment Authority has said.

The conference dubbed, United States –Uganda Trade and Business Forum, is the second of its kind and a follow-up of the first business forum which was held in Chicago, United States in 2009.

Ms Doris Mitti, the UIA deputy director, communications said the forum will offer fresh perspectives on how businesses can create sustainable growth and add value while capitalising on African Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa) trade agreement. “The Forum targets the Uganda business community especially those with potential to trade with the United States under the Agoa as well as those ready for expansion within the country,” Ms Mitti told a press conference at the Media Centre yesterday. She was representing Dr Maggie Kigozi, the UIA executive director.

The two-day conference will be organised under the theme, ‘10 years of Agoa, Challenges, Opportunities and Capacity of Local SMEs’ in Kampala between the 18 and 19. Ms Mitti said the conference will be presented by a distinguished panel of international and Ugandan speakers and the invited keynote speaker is Mr Jerry Lanier, the US Ambassador to Uganda.

Mr Ronald Mutebi, coordinator of the US-Uganda Trade and Business forum, said the conference will focus on northern Uganda as a destination for investment. “Northern Uganda is a virgin area with a lot of resources which are yet to be tapped. We also want to showcase northern Uganda because of the new nation (Southern Sudan) which is about to form,” Mr Mutebi said.
