Nigeria: US Trains Nigerian Customs Officers on AGOA
Selected officers of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) would soon undergo a three-day training to be conducted by United States officials. The training will be centered on effective regulation and implementation of the African Growth Opportunity Act (AGOA), a US policy that seeks to promote the importation of certain goods into its market.
Slated to begin tomorrow, the training would involve Customs' officers already working in the various ports of exit of goods meant for the US market.
The training session is expected to put them through technical, theoretical and practical sessions that will enhance their knowledge and compliance to inspect applications from would-be beneficiaries.
In a press statement issued at the weekend, the public affairs unit of Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) said that the country has got a number of trade benefits from AGOA.NEPC: "through the AGOA in 2000 Nigeria secured permit that allowed its textiles products into the US. Also in the statement, NEPC disclosed that "another shipment of Nigerian ethnic printed fabric would be heading to US soon, while another company is sending a trial order of children's wear from African prints this November."
Recently, NEPC spearheaded a Trade Mission with 14 companies including Stanmark Cocoa Processing Limited, Atlantic Shrimpers and Multi - Trex Limited among others to the US in a bid to obtain more information about AGOA.
