The 19th AGOA Civil Society Organization (CSO)Network Session of the AGOA Forum will take place October 6-8, 2021, during AfrICANDO 2021 under the theme “US-Africa Trade and Economic Cooperation: The Way Forward.” 

The AGOA CSO Network Session will be followed by the 19th AGOA Ministerial Forum October 20-21, 2021, in Washington, DC and virtually.  [See update and Zoom link further down]

Recommendations from the AGOA CSO Network Session and the private sector to be presented to the Ministers of Trade from Sub-Saharan Africa and the U.S. Government for discussion by the Network’s Secretariat in collaboration with other stakeholders.

The 18th AGOA Forum was hosted by the Government of Cote d Ivoire, August 4-16, 2019, in Abidjan. The AGOA Forum scheduled for 2020 was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Fred Oladeinde, Chairman of the AGOA Civil Society Organization Network and President, The Foundation for Democracy in Africa, "the economic impact of the COIVD 19 pandemic on AGOA eligible countries in the Sub-Saharan region of Africa presents a threat to U.S.-Africa relations and strategic alliances.

Progress made over the last two decades using the benefits of AGOA to strengthen US-Africa trade and economic cooperation is at risk. Additionally, AGOA benefits under the Trade Preferences Extension Act (TPEA) of 2015, passed by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Barack Obama in 2015, end in 2025.

Given the sunset of AGOA, setbacks to global trade and economic activities due to the COVID 19 pandemic, and expansionism in Africa by China and Russia, it is more important than ever to address “The Way Forward."

The AGOA CSO Network Session of the 19th AGOA Forum discussions will also include the ongoing negotiations between Kenya and the United States regarding the Free Trade Agreement and the onboarding of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat in Accra, Ghana.

La 19e session du réseau des organisations de la société civile (OSC) de l'AGOA du Forum de l'AGOA aura lieu du 6 au 8 octobre 2021 pendant AfrICANDO 2021 sous le thème « La coopération commerciale et économique entre les États-Unis et l'Afrique : la voie à suivre ». La session du réseau des OSC de l'AGOA sera suivie du 19e Forum ministériel de l'AGOA les 20 et 21 octobre 2021, à Washington, DC et virtuellement. Les recommandations de la session du réseau des OSC de l'AGOA et du secteur privé seront présentées aux ministres du commerce d'Afrique subsaharienne et du gouvernement des États-Unis pour discussion par le secrétariat du réseau en collaboration avec d'autres parties prenantes.

Le 18ème Forum AGOA a été organisé par le Gouvernement de Côte d'Ivoire, du 4 au 16 août 2019, à Abidjan. Le Forum AGOA prévu pour 2020 a été annulé en raison de la pandémie de COVID-19.

Selon Fred Oladeinde, président du réseau des organisations de la société civile de l'AGOA et président de la Fondation pour la démocratie en Afrique, « l'impact économique de la pandémie de COIVD 19 sur les pays éligibles à l'AGOA dans la région subsaharienne de l'Afrique présente une menace pour les États-Unis. Relations et alliances stratégiques avec l'Afrique. Les progrès réalisés au cours des deux dernières décennies en utilisant les avantages de l'AGOA pour renforcer la coopération économique et commerciale entre les États-Unis et l'Afrique sont menacés. De plus, l'AGOA bénéficie de la Loi sur l'extension des préférences commerciales (TPEA) de 2015, adoptée par le Le Congrès américain et promulguée par le président Barack Obama en 2015, prend fin en 2025. Compte tenu de la fin de l'AGOA, des reculs du commerce mondial et des activités économiques dus à la pandémie de COVID 19 et à l'expansionnisme en Afrique de la Chine et de la Russie, il est plus important que jamais pour aborder la voie à suivre."

La session du réseau AGOA des OSC du 19 e Forum AGOA comprendra également les négociations en cours entre le Kenya et les États-Unis concernant l'Accord de libre-échange et l'intégration du Secrétariat de la Zone de libre-échange continentale africaine (AfCTA) à Accra, au Ghana.
