Nigerian firms and Nigeria as a whole have a lot to benefit from active participation in the African Growth and Opportunities Act (AGOA), the Special Adviser to the President on AGOA, Mrs. Modupe Sasore, has said.

NigeriaShe said this, yesterday, while speaking on the topic "The Role of Information Communication in Trade Globalisation and the AGOA Programme" at the formal inauguration of Nigeria AGOA Resource Centre by the Nigeria-American Chamber of Commerce and West African Trade Hub (WATH) in Victoria Island, Lagos state.

Sasore however, said that one of the keys that will help to facilitate active participation was an increase in accessibility to information and support.

"The need for quality information that is both relevant and timely is of great essence, and must be met with equally high level of service characterised by functionality, reliability and innovation", she said.

The Special Adviser to the President noted that in recent times, local and global businesses have undergone a tremendous amount of change in culture and conduct of business adding that much of this change has been driven by advances in computer technology and digital communications allowing business to become more dynamic in nature.

She said Nigeria being among the initial set of 34 eligible countries under the AGOA programme which came into effect on January 1, 2001, has delayed in deriving maximum benefit from AGOA initiative in respect of non-oil exports and has therefore not made appreciable progress as done by other sub-Saharan African countries.
